Black Forest
Black Forest

The Black Forest is a popular destination for visitors and holiday-makers. It covers the area from the valley of the Upper Rhine between Waldshut and Basel to the edge of the Kraichgau between Karlsruhe-Durlach and Pforzheim.

Since granite rock comprising much of the terrain is relatively impermeable, water finds its way down slopes in streams with innumerable waterfalls.

On the western side the Black Forest rises from the low-lying Upper Rhine plain and falls gently on the eastern side to meet the characteristic "steps" of the Swabian landscape. The southern Black Forest regions are home to the highest peaks in the mountain range that provides magnificent views as far as the Swiss Alps. The highest peak of the southern range is the 1,493 m high Feldberg. The northern side provides visitors with impressive views of great forests, romantic valleys and smooth rounded hilltops.

The local inhabitants of this area are hard working and of an open turn of mind. They have retained their character, way of life, customs and traditional costumes. The characteristic farmhouses that can be found in this countryside add charm to the area.

Some highlights:

Triberg waterfall
The highest waterfall between the North Sea and the Alps is to be found in Triberg. Experience a grandiose natural spectacle that stands in a class of its own.
The Black Forest open air museum “Vogtsbauernhof”
Parish of Gutach on the Black Forest Railway. A Gutach house, built in 1570 illustrates how people lived in former times.
Titisee
The lake is a glacier bowl formed by an earlier Feldberg glacier.
