Imperial emblem – the Hohenzollern castle The emblem of the region - the Hohenzollern castle - is in the name: "Zollernalbkreis". This ancestral castle of the German emperors stands high above the foothills of the Swabian Alb. In 1886 Emperor William I commented: "The view from Castle Hohenzollern is truly worth a visit". But in addition to the splendid castle buildings, the castle museum and treasury as well as the secret passage with its medieval "Kasematten" (historical hiding places for soldiers) excavated in June 2004 are worth seeing and can be visited throughout the year. The tourist route "Hohenzollern Route" takes you "on emperor's traces" through the countryside that once made up "Hohenzollern territory". Along this route you can visit museums or admire the sights of castles and ancient royal capitals of the former Hohenzollern territory that are like pearls on a chain.
