Jurassic-Park The Alb precipice can be seen from afar and comprises a rock layer of the Swabian Alb situated in the Zollernalb landscape. The formation of this mountain plateau took place in the Cenozoic Era some 70 million years ago, influenced by the changing warm and glacial epochs and the erosive force of wind, water and ice. Almost 200 million years ago, the area of south Germany that is now dominated by the Swabian Alb was covered by a sea – the Jurassic Sea. This sea was inhabited by dinosaurs, sea monsters up to 18 metres in length that splashed around together with huge cuttlefish and crocodiles and there were also colonies of sea lilies. Fossils of that time can be seen in the fossil museum of the Dotternhausen cement factory. There is a place in front of the museum where you can even break stones and look for fossils. Fascinating creatures that inhabited a tropical lagoon situated there 150 million years ago have been found in the limestone ledges near Nusplingen, the so-called "Nusplinger Plattenkalk" – providing historic evidence of former times. The Geological Educational Trail is well worth a visit.
