Munich

Munich is the chief regional city in Bavaria and ranks after Berlin and Hamburg as Germany's third largest city. It is about two and a half hours drive away from the district of Zollernalb.

Some of the best known branches of industry are based here. There are stock exchanges, major banks; two universities and the city museum all known worldwide.

The "Deutsches Museum" provides an overview of the beginnings of natural sciences and technology leading up to the advanced stage of development of present times. Locomotives, cars, aircraft, mining, musical instruments and the physics, chemistry and astronomy departments are examples of the wide range of exhibits.

Music lovers have access to three opera houses and important orchestras offering high quality entertainment. There are more than 20 theatres to go to. All of this gives Munich a cosmopolitan atmosphere which is much appreciated by residents and visitors alike.

As long ago as the 13th century, Munich became the residential city of Bavarian dukes and it remained the capital city of the kingdom of Bavaria until 1806. King Ludwig I gave many fine buildings to the city.

The Oktoberfest, the world's largest folk festival, starts every year with twelve cannon salutes and the tapping of the first beer barrel. It attracts visitors from all over the world.

Don't forget to visit the Hofbräuhaus which lives up to its reputation. To be really authentic, you drink in the ground-floor "Schwemme" where the guests sit at wooden tables while listening to the sounds of an oompah-pah band. The waiters clad in Bavarian peasant dress appear carrying 10 steins at one go. Pretzels are sold on long sticks, and white Radis (radishes) are cut into fancy spirals.

In the city area there are numerous sports and leisure centres, of which first and foremost is the Olympic site.
