"Nusplinger Plattenkalk" A wonderful landscape with protected nature, geological excavations and fossils are the highlights of the educational trail "Into the empire of the Angel Sharks" ("Ins Reich der Meerengel"). According to your choice, ten, five or two kilometres of way lead back to the Jurassic Age of some 150 million years ago. At that time there was a world of islands with a tropical lagoon in the area where you will now find the communities of Nusplingen and Egesheim. The location is called the "Nusplinger Plattenkalk" ("The Nusplingen Lithographic Limestone").
Once there were marine crocodiles, pterosaurs, sharks - such as the ray-like angel shark - crabs, teuthoids or big dragon flies. On the islands of the lagoon grew araucaria, cycas palms and a species of fern with seeds which nowadays is extinct. The petrified remains of this fauna and flora, sometimes spectacularly complete, are to this day still preserved in the laminated limestone.
Take the time for a wonderful hiking tour which represents an important part of the "Geopark Swabian Alb" (Geological park Swabian Alb) and the "Naturpark Obere Donau" (Natural park Upper Danube). Enjoy the silence in the midst of nature and let your gaze roam from the mountains down to the Baera valley, its beautiful surroundings and the community of Nusplingen with its old St. Peter and Paul church. Imagine yourself back some million years ago in the time of the Jurassic Age.
