The highest mountains of the Swabian Alb
The highest mountains of the Swabian Alb

Only about 10 km from Balingen appear the most impressive mountains that are like a work of art modelled into the strata of white Jurassic rocks. Situated in a semicircle on the western edge of the Swabian Alb are the "Tausender" (the mountains that rise 1,000 metres high) and that are rated amongst the highest peaks of the Swabian Alb: Plettenberg (1002 m), Schafberg (996 m), Lochenstein (963 m), Hörnle (956 m), Gräbelesberg (915 m), Böllat (921 m) and Hundsrücken (931 m). These "Balinger mountains" would have a good chance of winning the prize for being one of the most attractive hiking regions of the Swabian Alb. Cyclists are lucky, because they have the chance of travelling on the Zollern railway by the "cycle-hiking-shuttle" onto the Alb plateau.
